According to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released the results of the 2021 Hemp Acreage and Production Survey in its National Hemp Report. The survey collected data for hemp grown in the open and hemp under protection. Planted area for industrial hemp cultivated in the open for all utilizations in the United States totaled 54,152 acres. The area harvested for all utilizations totaled 33,480 acres. The value of U.S. hemp production in the open totaled $712 million. The value of output for hemp grown under protection in the United States totaled $112 million. The area under protection totaled 15.6 million square feet.

With this trend and massive demand for hemp, growers shift their greenhouse and indoor farms to a commercial hemp production base. As the yields and quality of hemp growth are heavily influenced by light intensity – having supplemental or high-quality sole-source lighting systems is critical to maintaining plant health and maximizing cannabinoids content. Light Engine has developed the latest CabLED Grow Light System to support year-round hemp production.

In mid-2021, Light Engine has deployed the CabLED grow system in four trial farms, with three indoor farms in Michigan, California, and Washington, respectively, and one greenhouse in Colorado. The system was built with the flexible grow light strip fixed on every edge of the rack. The racks are situated between the hemp, providing a 360-degree light source to favor its growth.

The report shows a significant yield increase, with 23%, 31%, and 72% increment in the indoor farms located in California, Washington, and Michigan, respectively, while the result in Colorado 
greenhouse is still under processing. The difference in increase rate is due to the parameter variations from installation methods.
